New Transphobic Tampon Ad Is Super Infuriating (VIDEO)
A new advertisement airing on New Zealand television has brought on a firestorm of frustration from within the trans/genderqueer community. The ad is for a line of tampons called “Libra.” In the advert, two female-identified people sneak glances at each other, becoming increasingly competitive in the mirror of a public restroom. The women become palpably combative in comparing mascara, then lip gloss, then boobs, and finally, their tampons. One woman pulls out her tampon and seemingly “trumps” the other, because as the ad implies, only one of the two women needs one.
According to the New Zeland Herald, many people disgusted with the company’s tact have taken to the Libra Facebook page. One commenter called Bex Alphabet wrote: “I don’t think I’ve been so disgusted or offended by a tampon advert before (and let’s face it, most of them are terrible). Shame on you Libra. Not only is this a terrible, cruel reminder to people who might struggle with their gender, but also an insult to all women – how dare you imply we are that competitive and spiteful over a godamn period? So glad I don’t buy your products.”
