Queer Poetics: Racialized, Gendered Bodies and Disrespect, “Don’t”

Don't

Don’t

by Toi

Don’t want to be a

Black man

World’s foot

Upon my neck

Born to be

Scorned

Mouthful

Of a heeping plastic spoon

Of White Man

Disrespect

I don’t want to

Be a black man

Burden-backed

Spirit Broken

A dishonored

Pack mule/chattel/garbage

Wanting change

Just a Token

I said

I don’t want to

Be a black man

Don’t want to be a

brown man

World’s foot

Upon my neck

Born to be

Scorned

Mouthful

Of a heeping plastic spoon

Of White Man

Disrespect

I don’t want to

Be a brown man

Burden-backed

Spirit Broken

A dishonored

Pack mule/chattel/garbage

Wanting change

Just a Token

I said

I don’t want to

Be a

brown man

Never wanted to

Be a woman

World’s foot

Upon my neck

Born to be

Scorned

Mouthful

Of a heeping plastic spoon

Of disrespect

Don’t want to

Be a woman

Burden-backed

Spirit Broken

A dishonored

Pack mule/chattel/garbage

Wanting change

Just a Token

I said

I don’t want to

Be a woman

But I’m all of these.
