Can Boys Wear Dresses? Hot Topic on The View

“If I found out that my sons’ teacher let him put a dress on, I would be mad as all get out,” says Sherri Shephard, co-host of the View.

“What would you do if you found out you had a transgender child?” asked Barbara Walters.

Shephard suggested that if she had a transgender child, her kid could be “transgender once they got out of the house.”

Shepard was responding to Woopie Goldberg’s discussion question regarding the fact that “boys are getting more toy kitchens nowadays,” to which Woopie said she thought was wonderful.

A very “The View” examination of gender expression in kids ensued.

Barbara brought the idea of sensitivity towards trans kids into the mix–maybe jumping the gun as to whether “boys wearing dresses” is a gateway to being trans. And Woopie wondered why traditional ‘boys’ dolls are called “action figures.”

Nearly the end of the video, Shepard nearly explicitly says it’s OK to be gay in her house, but not trans.
